On the Fourth of July
In a carnival tent
Star-Spangled Banner on an old violin
She's here, then she's gone
And I know where she went
I'm burning for her
And she's burning for him
Missiles and whistlers, sparkers and snakes
Helicopter rockets sputter and shake
She drifted away like the smoke in the sky
So it's breakfast for one on the 5th of July
I see couples kissing in the fireworks' glow
I walk past their shadows with nowhere to go
I'm a little too old for this parking lot pain
With a second-place smile and no one to blame
Missiles and whistlers, sparklers and snakes
Helicopter rockets sputter and shake
She drifted away like the smoke in the sky
So it's breakfast for one on the 5th of July
Oh the booming finale
Lights the sky with a flash
Turning rainbows of colors
To snowy black ash
Now I'm staring out the window
At the tent coming down
They're pulling up the stakes
And clearing up the grounds
The waitress smiles at me
Says 'Are you alone?'
She pours me some coffee
She turns, and she's gone
Missiles and whistlers, sparklers and snakes
Helicopter rockets sputter and shake
She drifted away like the smoke in the sky
So it's breakfast for one on the 5th of July
